Birthday Farewell... Whole 30 & My 12 Month Goal

I just had a birthday! After a lengthy review of my life path, not only have I decided to dust off and resurrect this blog, but I have also determined that I will spend the next 12 months optimizing my health with diet and exercise.

Those who know me, know that I love to celebrate. Holidays, birthdays, promotions, anniversaries; you name it, I want to throw a party for it. It makes me feel good to bring people together, prepare a delicious meal and enjoy it with them. So, this year, for my 41st birthday, I decided to invite a group of 20 friends and family over for an early dinner party.

This was no average dinner party. With my new goal set to take the next 12 months to correct a lifetime of overindulgence, this was a fond farewell to sugar, grain & dairy... a "last hurrah," as it were. So, to start, I served a cheese and fruit platter: Manchego (hard sheep milk cheese from Spain), triple cream brie, Boursin and Midnight Moon (aged goat cheese); I broiled 2 sides of steelhead, served it with classic rice pilaf and broccolini. The gluten free cake was vanilla, bavarian cream and chocolate buttercream with chocolate ice cream.  We killed two bottles of vodka (with cranberry pomegranate)  and six bottles of bubbly. It. Was. Perfect.

Now that I'm technically "over forty," and would qualify as "morbidly obese," I have resolved to spend the next 30 days without grain, sugar and dairy - The Whole 30. The long term goal is to lose between 60 and 100 pounds by my next birthday. 12 months. After the first month on the more restrictive Whole 30, I will transition to Paleo.
