Summer Solstice
My first camping trip this year was a rainy one. Actually, the overcast sky made for excellent hiking, or nature walking... Although, nature provided a close-up on a circle of life I could've done without. I'm pretty sure we witnessed an animalian attack of some sort or another, but we'll never know, my instincts said, "time to go."
Needless to say, that night we skipped the lamb steak. I didn't pack cinnamon, but I did have lavender from my garden. I always pack fresh herbs and it was the perfect compliment to the fresh berries.
Because I'm gluten intolerant, I deprive myself of s'mores but once per year. Even though I found gluten free graham crackers at the store, I still only had one and have a mind to keep it that way even though I have at least one more camping trip this summer... The point of this is, I crushed gluten free graham crackers in a bowl, mixed it with equal parts coconut sugar and a pinch of sea salt. The berries I tossed in a bit of regular organic cane sugar and of course, the lavender! Throw everything in a foil pack with a tbs or two of butter, seal it up and; shazam! Into the fire it goes.
Turn it a few times and throw a few hot coals on top. Now, idk about you, but when I camp, I build a fire every night to cook and drink around. I this particular instance, I was camping with a large group of families I didn't really know, so we brought the completed crisp to their campfire and passed it around with a spoon. Add in some stories about working for George Lucas and you've got a party. ;-)
